If you are looking for an interesting travel destination you should consider visiting the city of Petra. Petra is located in the country of Jordan and was practically unknown by the rest of the world until its discovery in 1812. Petra has a number of unique and interesting historical sites. If you are going to be doing any international travel, you must remember that you will need a valid United States passport before you will be allowed to leave the country. If you need an expedite U.S. passport, go online and find a passport agency.

International Travel

Passports are important travel documents that allow their holders to freely travel throughout the world. Without a passport you would not be allowed to leave the country. Also, if you are already overseas and lose your passport, you will not be allowed to reenter the United States until you obtain a replacement passport. Unlike in the past, getting a passport has never been easier. Gone are the days of waiting in line at the post office for a passport application. Now, you are only a few mouse clicks away from getting your new U S passport.

Petra

Named after its stunning rose colored rock formations, Petra was declared a World Heritage Site in 1985 by UNESCO. There are many wonderful historical sites you can visit while in Petra. It is thought by scientists that the ancient city of Petra was established sometime around the 6th century. It served, during this time, as the capital of the Nabataens. Petra is one of the most visited cities in the Middle East because of all the history that it contains.

UNESCO

The site was not heard of in the Western World. It wasnt until 1812 when the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt introduced the city describing it as a rose-red city half as old as time. The city became famous. UNESCO described it as one of the worlds most precious cultural properties. The city is referenced many times in ancient Egyptian documents such as the Amarna letters as well as ancient Hebrew texts such as the Torah. Although the city was founded relatively late, there was a sanctuary that predates its founding. Ancient scholars and writers, such as Pliny the Elder also described this ancient city and recounted its beauty and geography.

Sites

Petra is an archaeological park which makes it a bit more expensive than other Jordanian attractions; however it is definitely worth it. When visiting Petra guides can be hired, you can even ride a camel or donkey while touring the city.
