Rottweiler Training And The Proper Use Of Treats

Training your pet can certainly make everyday living a lot easier for you and your beloved pet. This post gives you several ideas that you can use when learning effective Rottweiler training. Have a great time when doing this with your pet and soon enough you'll see great results.

One training approach is to give your pet a treat as an incentive for good performance. Below are a few recommendations on the best way to use treat when teaching various obedience commands:

  • To teach your pet to sit, have him in a standing position and hold a treat in the air. Move the treat directly above his head, therefore moving your hand behind him. This will make him look up as he tries to follow your hand. Each time a dog does this, it is normal for him to sit. When he is about to sit, say the command "sit" and the instant his rear end reaches the floor, praise and reward him with the treat you are holding.
  • When training your pet to stay, take baby steps. First tell him to sit or lie down. When he has held that position for a couple of seconds, tell him to stay. If he stays longer, give him a treat. Allow and do the process again, rewarding him after he stays a bit longer with every repetition.
  • Part of Rottweiler training is to teach your pet to come. To do this, a long rope is a great aid. Call the puppy as you gently pull him to you and praising him for coming. Once he gets to you, praise him a lot more and offer a favorite treat. Shortly, the puppy will associate his name and coming to you with praise and treats, then you won't need the rope anymore.
  • To keep your pet from barking, teach him to follow an easy order that will make him calm. When your pet barks, show him a treat and repeat the command, for instance 'be quiet' until he stops barking. Wait for a few seconds and then give him the treat. If you repeat this long enough, your pet will connect the treat and then the command with the behavior which is to keep quiet.
  • - When housebreaking a dog it is quite important for him to learn that when he went potty outside, you are proud of him. Give him a treat and some attention as soon as he has done his business. Don't just let him go about his business while you go about yours.

It's best to start Rottweiler training by giving him a treat every time he does what you would like him to. After he gets the hang of it, decrease the treats and only give him a treat 75% of the time while increasing other styles of reward such as praise and playtime. Continue reducing treats until he only gets one once in a while.
