Making a Smock Dress

Locate a smock dress or peasant dress pattern that you want. You can use a pattern from a commercial company, including Vogue , or you can download one of many online with free streaming patterns within the Resources section.

Determine the scale pattern you will need to your smock dress through your measurements with all the measuring tape. Measure your bust, waist and hips to get a general sense of the scale you'll need, then match the greatest measurement to the pattern. Take your armhole depth measurement, and appraise the distance relating to the shoulder and also the skirt hem. Then compare these measurements to the pattern to find out if make adjustments. When the pattern has sleeves, compare the sleeve length measurements also. Adjust as necessary.

Cut the pattern from your paper, and pin it to a double layer of fabric. Cut four with the sleeve piece and a couple with the front and rear pieces. When the pattern has belt, neckline or cuffs, cut these as directed. Press all fabric pieces before stitching.

Pin the sleeve pieces to the back bodice piece across the armhole line, right sides together. Stitch it in position, following the seam allowance measurement for that pattern. Press and handle the seams as desired, either by zigzag stitching or serging. Fold the sleeve pieces to the inside of the bodice, lining the contrary sleeve curves from the armhole line. Lay the front bodice piece, right side down, on top of the trunk bodice piece, lining it from the armhole. Pin together outdoors armhole lines together, and stitch in position. Press and handle the seams.

Pull the sleeves from the armholes so that all right sides are together. Pin together along side it seams, from your sleeve hem to the dress hem, and stitch the seams in position. Press and handle the seams. Turn beneath the sleeve and dress bottom hems and stitch in position.UKDRESSSTORE Press the hems flat. When the smock dress includes any neckline banding, pin and stitch the banding to the neckline, leaving the trunk open about inches. Otherwise, turn the neckline under and stitch in position, leaving the trunk open inches.

Attach the elastic to a large safety pin, and thread it through the -inch opening, pushing the elastic all the way around the banding until referring out your other part. Stitch together the ends with the elastic, then push the elastic to the banding, and stitch the outlet closed. Finish any accessories, including belts or another elastic casings.
