A burglar alarm hampers any type of forced entry into your property, and protects your family from any danger. It can come in different kinds, and can apply different systems as well. In fact, some security systems do not just prevent break-ins, but even fire and similar dangers as well.
Burglar alarms can be for in house or for outdoor usage. Inside, the most commonly applied are Passive Infrared Detectors, normally seen in residential homes and in small enterprises as they are less expensive. They detect hazards by looking for shifts in temperature. On the other hand, Ultrasonic detectors use movement to detect any obtrusion, while Photoelectric Beams detect the presence of an intruder when the beam is obstructed. Other indoor alarms are glass break detectors, in addition to smoke, high temperature and deadly carbon monoxide alarms.
Outdoor alarm systems also vary, but are more probable to have false alarms. Vibration or Inertia Shakers can have a minimal false alarm rate, and relies on vibrations and movement to detect danger. Passive Magnet Field Detectors are also less likely to sound off a false alarm, using an electromagnetic field generator that sounds the alarm when the magnetic field is tripped. They are of course more expensive, as outdoor systems do not only have the harder burden of segregating certain from bogus hazards, but would also have to be able to withstand environmental conditions. There are other less costly options such as the E-field, although this triggers a lot of false alarms since it is unable to differentiate human from animal.
Additionally you can choose from making your burglar alarm monitored, or unmonitored. Monitored systems are connected to a main command unit, where all alarms that are activated are handled. It is then up to the central command device to call up the authorities and inform them of the hazard. This would result in additional fees, and would also not be as effective in case of any service interruptions in phone lines and power lines. Unmonitored systems would result in the fact that you need to call the authorities yourself, or rely on a neighbor to observe the danger and communicate it to the authorities.
Despite having the most advanced systems, you must still remind your family to be constantly watchful. Understand that there isn't a faultless burglar alarm, and in some cases the most expensive alarm systems could be unsuccessful if you keep on being remiss regarding your security.
