Conquering Temptation Through Moderation - A Few Quick Dieting Tips



The word "diet" is often correlated with the word "interim", or something that isn't meant to last. Spring breaks, weddings and even weekend beach trips will get us to lose some weight. However, these are what you can loosely refer to as crash diets. They are unhealthy and once you stop them, your weight will come back. Studies show you'll be heavier than when you started. So you may as well see it as a lifestyle change, a paradigm shift, but not a diet. This doesn't mean you have to give up fried chicken, pizza or even chocolate. Eating is a big part of our lives and should be enjoyed. You just need to moderate yourself - another important tenet of life in general. If you can't live without fried chicken, eat it, just not everyday. If absence makes the heart grow fonder, maybe the same applies for your stomach if you have these guilty pleasures less!

It's no joke to switch over from the unhealthy foods you enjoyed since childhood to more health-conscious options. Perhaps you'll want to leave the television at one of those makeover shows next time you go channel surfing. A good number of these shows would try to forcibly convince people to make a 360-degree turn and change how they eat in under a week's time. While this may seem healthy, it probably won't lead to any long term changes. What would YOU do if you were in such a show? Most of you perhaps have one food type or more that you truly crave, but isn't healthy. If somebody told you that you cannot ever touch these foods, what would be your initial reaction? Most people will be revolted by the idea.

You can undergo this process slowly but surely. Think of ways you can put a healthy spin on your favorite "junk" foods. For example, you might want to stop ordering pizza to go and start making it yourself. There are easy to use crusts available at your grocery store. Use your choice of toppings. Opt for baked chicken rather than fried chicken. Don't go out, make it yourself. That's the great thing about home cooking - it reminds you of home, you don't have to drive to a restaurant, and most of all, it's usually healthier than restaurant food or fast food.

Yet another quick and easy way to get healthy would be by opting for a certain food's fat-free or low fat version. Low-fat and fat-free options are available for milk, peanut butter, cream cheese and other popular dairy products. Sometimes companies do a good job with taste and sometimes they don't. In some cases it might not even be possible to get the same taste with all the fat taken out. Again, we must remind you, take baby steps instead of giant leaps. If you want to switch from whole milk to fat free milk, you must remember that this won't happen all in one go. Take it in steps over the coarse of a few weeks. You may not even notice that it tastes different! Use the same principle with other forms of dairy. If the fat-free substitute is none too pleasant to the taste, try a low-fat version if available.

Most importantly, don't ever deprive yourself of something you love. Okay, we all have to fess up about the occasional overindulgence. But being more conscious about these missed marks could help - try discouraging yourself from gorging on cookies by reading the label. Eat a serving and put the pack down.
